Mother’s Day 2015

Today is Mother’s Day! And luckily, I got to share the day with my mom. I always cherish the times I get to enjoy hanging out with my momma one on one. She’s so much fun to be around, she’s always positive, and she always has a warm smile on her face.

I know, I know, everyone always thinks THEIR mom is the best mom, just like everyone always thinks THEIR dog is the cutest dog. But, she really is the best. And my dog is the cutest.

So for Mother’s Day, I took my mom and stepdad out for brunch and mimosas at Palace Cafe. It’s a cute little restaurant on Cherry Street here in Tulsa that I really enjoy going to.

For brunch, I had the crab cakes Benedict, my mom had the biscuit of the day which was a biscuit topped with steak, poached eggs, and hallandaise sauce, and my stepdad had the salmon BLT with an Asian twist to it.

I didn’t get a picture of the salmon, but it looked great!

My gift to my mom was really brunch and spending time together, but I also got her a couple of small gifts.

I got her a box of 5 nice chocolates from my favorite local chocolate store here in town. I also got her a pair of socks. Yep. Socks. I never claimed to be the best gift giver. But my motto is, I buy what I like. I learned that from my sister. Anyways, they’re inspirational socks with sayings such as “I am confident” or “I am amazing” or “I am a great friend” or “I love you” which is the quote on the pair I got my mom.

After brunch, our plan was to go ride bikes on Riverside. It was supposed to rain, but thankfully it held off all day, so we did indeed get to go ride bikes!

Bike riding with my mom was a blast! We rode all around the cute town of Jenks and also up and down Riverside.

Here’s a couple pics of us on the pedestrian bridge over the Arkansas river.

Notice how the picture my mom took is half sky and no bike? ….lol. She’s never claimed to be an expert photographer, but I love her anyways.

After our 5 and 1/2 mile bike ride, we decided to go get coffee and dessert at Starbucks. Since the weather today was absolutely amazing (warm, breezy, and overcast) we sat outside and enjoyed our coffees and smores tart.

Yum! We shared the 310 calorie tart for the perfect afternoon dessert.

Right next door to Starbucks is a health store called Complete Nutrition. I’d never been there before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, and to my surprise, they had Quest bars!

If you don’t know about Quest bars, you should! They have the best stats ever. Obviously the nutrition varies on each flavor, but the smores bar (my favorite so far) has 180 calories, 8 grams of fat, 23 grams of carbs, 1 gram of sugar, 20 grams of protein, and 13 grams of fiber. Seriously, the fiber part gets me! It’s the perfect snack.

So yeah, there are other “health” bars out there that taste better, but these taste really decent considering their nutritional value. We each bought 4 bars and 2 bags of the Quest brand chips.

If you know me at all, then you know my weakness is chips. They’re salty. They’re crunchy. They’re delicious. They’re not great for you. These Quest chips are a GREAT alternative to regular potato chips.

The chips have 120 calories per bag with 2 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs, 1 gram of sugar, and 21 grams of protein. They have a protein taste, yes, but these could easily pass for baked chips served along side a sandwich or with a dip. I would buy them way more often if they weren’t so expensive. Yum! I think I’ll take a bag with me next weekend to Dallas for a car ride snack.

For someone who is trying to go vegetarian or at least eliminate a lot of meat from their diet, these chips (and bars!) are a great way to make sure you’re hitting your protein goal.

After leaving the health store, I brought my momma home and headed to my own home to enjoy the evening with MY child, my doggy, Pudge.

She watched me eat dinner, listened to some Nicki Minaj songs with me, got some yummy treats (I assume they’re yummy, though I’ve never tried them), and we enjoyed a long walk outside in between the rain/thunderstorms.

Today was a perfect day! I love weekends. I love spending time with my mom. I love combing the two.

Hope all of you enjoyed your weekend!

I’m planning to do a “What I ate _______day” post this week, maybe Tuesday, maybe Wednesday, whatever day I feel like it really.

Until next time!

No funny meme today, but I’ll leave you with an inspirational quote. Couldn’t be more appropriate for my future Mexican vacation.

I Said YES…To Bacon

I love BBQ. It’s just delicious. There is so much flavor in BBQ. And the sauce…you can’t not mention the sauce. Who doesn’t love a sweet and salty and tangy and spicy BBQ sauce?

I’ve been eating a lot of BBQ lately. Not really on purpose, but it just sorta happened that way. I went out for a birthday dinner with my church to Rib Crib, my step-dad has grilled ribs twice recently (in which I was there both times), and then I went out with some friends to lunch at a different BBQ place last Saturday.

All of the BBQ was great. My step-dad makes some killer ribs! They’re salty and flavorful and just moist and delicious. His ribs are hard to beat.

But the BBQ I’m going to tell you about right now is from a place here in Tulsa called Burn Co. It’s a small little place that’s only open from 10:30-2:30, or until they run out of food. It’s pretty popular for the 4 hours they’re open. We got there at 10:20 and there were already 3 people in line waiting outside. By the time they opened at 10:30, there were about 15 people in line.

When they finally opened up (that 10 minutes of wait time was brutal, it smelled so good even from outside!) we were immediately offered food. While looking at the menu and thinking about what to order, they handed out rib samples, smoked sausage samples, bologna samples, and a huge slice of “the fatty” to sample. “The fatty” is a sausage wrapped in ground sausage wrapped in bacon and then smoked. It was goooooood!

I sampled both “the fatty” and the ribs and was torn between what to order. Luckily my friend Kara was torn too and we decided to get one of each and share. Perfect!

Here’s “the fatty.”

And here are the ribs.

20130605-122637.jpg

The ribs were great! They had a spiciness to them that I really enjoyed. They were super flavorful and easy to eat.

The sides with the BBQ were great as well. I had the grilled potato salad, which was amazing. It was filled with potatoes, red onions, green bell peppers, and bacon.

Kara had the smoked Mac N Cheese. I thought it was ok. I didn’t love the smokey flavor on it, but everyone else enjoyed it.

Overall, I absolutely adored this little hole-in-the-wall BBQ place! I’ll be going back for sure.

And since this is a blog about weight loss, I should probably mention that even though I went out and had BBQ, I still feel like I did it in moderation. I had 4 ribs (including the sample rib I had), 3 bites of “the fatty”, a side of grilled potato salad, one bite of the mac and cheese, and un-sweet tea to drink. I felt full but not stuffed or gross by any means.

I did, however, have a feeling of guilt afterwards, so I just made sure I went to jazzercise the next morning. So instead of beating myself up about having one not so great meal, I went and exercised to burn it off.

This feeling of guilt is something new to me and I must say I like it! It keeps me in check with what I’m eating, when before I never even cared one bit. I think this feeling is something that slowly changes in you over time as you start to eat healthy MOST of the time. It’s like it’s your body’s way of saying “don’t lose everything you’ve worked so hard for by eating this pint of moose tracks ice cream.”

I wonder, do any of you have this same feeling of guilt? If so, does it work for you? As in, does it help you make better choices?

Sweating Rainbows

The Tulsa Color Run was this past weekend, and it was my first time participating. If you remember from my goal list, I had on there to complete The Color Run, and I’m glad to say, I did!

It took about an hour to finish, and I was definitely happy with that time. I got my mom to do the 5k with me and I’m glad it was something we got to do together!

If you’re not familiar with The Color Run, it’s basically a fun 5k where you start out wearing a white shirt (and some pants of course!) and along the way, you get covered in colored powders. In the end, you end up looking like a rainbow. 🙂

The race was great because about 5 times along the way, they had the color stations set up. It gave you something to look forward to so that the exercise part didn’t seem so bad.

Here are some before pictures…

Like I said earlier, there were color stations along the way. At one of them, I told my mom that we should take a pictures, so we stopped over by the “orange” sign to take a couple pictures. As I was pulling out my phone from the ziplock baggy, my debit card flew out of the ziplock and bounced down into the rain drain on the side of the road. I’ll forever remember the color run for the fact that I lost my debit card down the drain!

Here I am right after it happened. I’m pretty sure I was annoyed…haha.

I quickly forgot about the debit card and enjoyed the rest of the race with my mom. After we finished, we met up with Megan and took some after pictures.

And then we refueled with some KIND nut bars they were handing out after the race. Yum! I had the dark chocolate nuts and sea salt one. Delicious!

After the race, I of course took a long shower, but I had blue coloring in my ears for 2 days after! It was a really fun race though and I’m already looking forward to The Color Run-2014!

I’m setting a goal right now to be able to run (not walk!) The Color Run next year. We shall see…

My 27 Goals

My BFF recently told me about this idea she read about where on your birthday every year, you make a list of goals you want to accomplish that year. The number of goals you make is based off of how old you are. Even though my birthday is in November, I still thought it was a cool idea and I wanted to participate. Better late than never!

The BFF posted her goals on her blog recently and it inspired me to make my own list (I had been procrastinating). Here’s a link to see her 26 goals.
Megan’s Blog

So here goes MY list of 27 goals.

1. Start a blog- Well that was easy. I can mark this off of my list.

2. Compete in the Color Run 5k- I participated in the Glow Run, which was fun, but the color run looks like even more of a good time. My mom and I are going to do it together in April!

3. Lose 60 Pounds- The last weigh in I did was on Sunday and I weighed in at 335 pounds. That’s a 37 pound weight loss! I’m already over halfway there. Of course I’m going to keep going after 60 pounds, but this is a nice small stepping stone to a larger goal.

4. Go to New York for a weekend with my mom- My mom travels a lot and goes to New Jersey often. She mentioned me possibly flying out to NYC and having a fun weekend together since she’ll be in that area already. I’m excited and hope we get to do this because I’ve always wanted to go to NYC!

5. Go to Church more often- I’ve already accomplished this one as well. I’ve been to a church function, a Sunday night church service, and I’m going to Sunday morning service this Sunday. And I have been doing Bible study every Tuesday for the past 3 Tuesday’s.

6. Try a new restaurant- I always say there are tons of restaurants I wanna try but I usually end up going to the same places. Since I’m not eating out hardly at all, this would be a nice treat to do once.

7. Make new friends- I’ve got some great friends, so I’m not trying to replace any of them. It can never hurt to meet new people though. Did you ever know someone who had too many friends?

8. Clean my apartment- Like a deep clean. If you know me, you know I’m messy. And I’d like to actually have people over, which leads me to my next goal…

9. Have people over to my apartment- I never have anyone over because my apartment is messy. I’m determined to get it clean and keep it that way so that I can have people over and feel comfortable with it.

10. Meet my nephew- My only sibling is having her first baby and I’m soooo excited! He’s due in May and I plan on going to Dallas after he’s born to meet him. He’s going to be the cutest thing ever and I plan to spoil him and be the best aunt I can be!

11. Make another super healthy dessert- I enjoyed the banana chocolate blueberry muffins so much that I’d like to make another healthy dessert. It was just so cool to me that they turned out like a cupcake even though there was no butter, oil, or sugar. Crazy!

12. Get my teeth whitened- Who doesn’t want whiter teeth? I feel like mine could use a little whitening so why not?

13. Make a killer playlist to workout to- Pretty self explanatory. Rhapsody is amazing and I’m sure I can create a great playlist from all their song selections.

14. Go to a meseum- I haven’t been to a museum in forever! I’ve been talking about wanting to go to one so I put it on my list. Now I’ll have to make time for it. 🙂

15. Take my grandma out for a day of fun- I don’t see my grandma often enough so I should make an effort to spend some quality time with her. You never know, it could be her time to go tomorrow, and I don’t want to regret not spending time with her.

16. Read 3 books- I need to start reading again. I just don’t make time for it and I should. Three books isn’t that many, I can do it!

17. Go to Trader Joes- When I go down to Dallas next time, I’m going to visit Trader Joes. I hear it’s pretty great and that they’ve got good prices. I wish they’d bring one to Tulsa.

18. Light my candles more often- I love candles and I buy them pretty often, but I don’t light them that often and I don’t know why. They smell so great.

19. Watch the sun set- This one is simple and it happens every single day but I never pay attention to it.

20. Exercise with my sister- I can already imagine what this will look like. I’ll be a biggest loser contestant and she’ll be Jillian. Haha. I remember back in the day my sister and I used to do Tae Bo together and then go eat spam sandwiches. It was a lot of fun! Except this time, no spam.

21. Change the lightbulbs in my apartment- Some of them have gone out and I still haven’t changed them out. It’s getting darker in my apartment…haha.

22. Buy a lunch box- I need something besides a Reasors sack to bring my lunch in. I also need a reusable ice pack so I can keep it cold.

23. Paint something at Pinot’s Palette- I’ve been dying to go and paint a picture there! I hope to do this one soon with my momma.

24. Go to the farmers market on Saturday morning- Now that I’m eating more vegetables, it’d be nice to get some local fresh veggies from the farmers market.

25. Give up diet pop for a week- This one might be hard. I’m hoping that if I can give it up for a week, then I can try to cut it out completely. We shall see!

26. Cook together with my dad- This one is easy because I do it often, but it’s something I enjoy and I’d love to keep it up. We make a lot of healthy stir-frys in the wok I got him for Christmas. It’s become part of our Sunday ritual and I cherish that father daughter time together.

27. Make homemade doggy treats for my dog- I don’t buy treats often for my dog. She’s getting older and I think her stomach doesn’t tolerate them as well as it used to. I’ve heard that pumpkin is good to soothe a dogs stomach so I’d love to make her a treat that’s good for her.

Well, that’s my list of 27 goals I’d like to accomplish before November 13th 2013. I’ll update you on my progress as I complete them. I really like this idea of making goals. It gives you something to look forward to doing and it gives you a sense of accomplishment after you complete a goal. You should try it too!
