Big Girl Biking

Being a big girl, sometimes exercise can be difficult or uncomfortable. For example, when I’m at the gym and I decide to ride the stationary bike, it’s difficult for me because a lot of my extra fat is in my stomach area. So when I pedal, my legs/knees move up into my stomach, making it sorta miserable and uncomfortable.

So when my best friend Megan decided she wanted to go biking on riverside here in Tulsa, I was a little skeptic. I was nervous that it would be hard for me to bike without my knees going into my chub. Also, I feared that I’d be too heavy and the bike would just break into a million pieces. Other than those 2 slightly major fears, I was excited about the biking.

As I think I’ve said before, I am loving getting out on the weekends and doing stuff, fun stuff, exercise stuff! If you know me, you’d know that up until recently, I always said I “hated the great outdoors.” Well, I don’t feel that way anymore. I love being outside and doing fun things now. I just hope (fingers crossed) that when summer comes and its 120 degrees outside, that I’m still enjoying being outside and being active. Fat girls and hot as hell heat don’t mix.

As for yesterday though, the weather was perfect, about 85 degrees, clear skies, and sunny. We rented our bikes on Riverside in Tulsa at a place called Tulsa Townies (http://www.tulsa-townies.com). Basically, you use your credit card to rent the bikes, and if you return the bike within 24 hours, you don’t get charged, so it’s free!

You can see the bike rental area behind me. The trail we took started when we crossed the white bridge behind me, and then keeps going all along riverside, a trail that is exactly what it says; along a river. We rode for 2 miles one way, then turned around and came back for a total of 4.13 miles biked. We stopped a few times along the way also. Total it took us 32 minutes.

I was pretty exhausted and my legs were worn out. When we started, I think in our minds we thought we’d go farther, but it was a good, tough workout. There were hills along the way, so our legs had to work hard. Either way, it was such a blast! I hope we go again soon and maybe next time, we’ll ride farther.

I wanted to tell you also about my other exercise this week. I worked out 6 times total this week, all doing different things! Here’s what I did this week.

  • Hiking on turkey mountain last Sunday
  • Walked around apartment complex on Tuesday
  • Walked after work on trail near my job
  • Walked on treadmill at the gym Friday night
  • Went bike riding Saturday morning
  • Walked around track at the gym and did arm exercises at the gym Saturday evening

I like variety. It just makes exercise more fun! Here in about an hour, Megan, my friend Demi, and I are going to go back and hike turkey mountain, then go grab lunch.

Yesterday, Megan and I went to Freebirds for lunch after biking. I’m now obsessed with that place. Their website is GREAT if you’re looking to count calories. You just click what you’re adding to your burrito, and it adds up your calories. We’re going back again today for lunch. So easy and so good!

Speaking of food, my eating has been pretty great this week. I had one mess up yesterday where I decided to go get Chinese food, but other than that, I feel like I’ve made great choices. Here’s some of what I ate last week.

The first day, I made black bean tacos for lunch but the beans made the tacos soft and fall apart. So the next day, I decided to eat the beans on the side and just have avocado tacos with diced Roma tomato and cotija cheese. Sooo yummy! I served the tacos with either carrots or green beans.

Breakfast was omelets with toast OR cereal and scrambled eggs.

I had tuna salad sandwiches for a couple lunches and once for dinner. Tuna is such an easy go to for a quick meal. Tuna even saved me from going to Taco Bueno one night after working out because I was tired, but I knew I could make a really fast tuna sandwich so I didn’t end up getting fast food.

For dinners last week, I had pizza toasts with a side salad, PF Chang’s frozen Mongolian beef with fried rice, mini chicken tacos with guacamole and a side salad, and baked fish with mashed potatoes and carrots.

I wanted to be able to give a weight loss update, but I don’t have one for this week. Even with all this exercise, I’ve actually gained a pound. I’m going to tell myself that it’s muscle so I don’t get discouraged from continuing to exercise and eat healthy.

Even without weight loss, it has been a great week! Now I must go so I can go hike turkey mountain with my friends!

Another Milestone Achieved

So it seems like since the last time I posted my updated weight (11 days ago), my weight has sorta fallen off easily since then!

I hit 299.2 pounds on the 15th. That was a major milestone as its been soooo long since I’ve been under 300 pounds. The next goal after that was to hit 75 pounds lost.

If you remember, I started out at 372 pounds and I’m glad to say that as of this morning, I’m at 293.5!

That’s a total of 78.5 pounds lost!

I did a little calculating and figured out my average weekly weight loss is almost 3 pounds a week. I’ve been dieting and changing my lifestyle since December 18th, 2012, or 27 weeks ago. This is the longest by far that I’ve ever stuck to eating healthy and exercising regularly. It feels amazing!

I guess my next goal is to hit 100 pounds lost, and you know what that means? It means I need to think of a reward for myself! My 50 pound weight loss reward was my bright Skechers tennis shoes. I loved them so much that they turned into my exercise shoes. Those shoes really helped me keep my weight loss going. So I want my 100 pound weight loss reward to be just as great! Any ideas you have are appreciated!

A second milestone I had was last night when I exercised! Megan came over for a walk/run, which usually means walk because I’ve never really been able to run. We started out walking and then power walking and then finally I said, “ok, let’s run to that car.” We ran on and off for most of the workout. And the crazy thing is, it was A LOT easier than times in the past where I tried to run.

We ran/walked about 2 miles in maybe 35 minutes. Here’s our crazy run path!

It was a great and fun workout and we both decided we wanted to do it again soon! I think we’ll try for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. And of course, I’ve still got jazzercise both days this weekend so maybe one day, I’ll get a double workout in!

Just Checking In

I was waiting to give a weight update because I was really hoping I’d be under 300 pounds this week. But…..I’m not………yet.

Before I tell you my latest weight, first I wanna tell you about the exercise I’ve been doing. As you know, I joined jazzercise a couple weeks ago. I didn’t think I’d go to class more than once a week, but I love it so much that I made time to go. I went to jazzercise class Saturday morning, Sunday morning, and Tuesday morning the past 2 weeks.

I’m really proud of myself for getting up early and going to workout on Tuesdays, which is the only day that I could sleep in because I don’t have to work until 10:15. But, I enjoy the exercise so I make myself get up early anyways.

Ok now back to my weight. My latest weight is 300.4. A half of a freaking pound is all I need to lose to hit my goal of being under 300! I have been stuck on 300.4 since Saturday (5 days). So when Tuesday came around, I was pumped to go to jazzercise because I thought it would for sure get me under 300. Unfortunately we had a substitute instructor who needed to be somewhere so we had a short class. But she also changed it up and we did toning and sculpting. NO cardio. I was totally bummed!

Needless to say, the next morning I weighed myself and I was at 303.6. Muscles may be nice and all, but I’ve got a goal to hit, so that toning and sculpting class annoyed me a little.

Today, I weighed in at 301.6. I guess the muscle mass is going down so we’ll see if I can get under 300 pounds this week.

One thing I learned about myself this week in relation to exercise is that if I don’t get up early and exercise in the morning, I’m probably not going to do it. Also I learned that I really need that push of going to a class and having someone show me or tell me what to do. If left alone to exercise, I never burn nearly as many calories as I do when I’m being instructed. The final thing I learned about myself in relation to exercise is that I enjoy it. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, I LOVE jazzercise.

Well, I better go ahead and get to bed. I didn’t make the best choices today food-wise so I’m attempting to get up and go to the 5:30 AM jazzercise class tomorrow morning. Goodnight!

The Dreaded Plateau

I seem to have hit a plateau in my weight loss. My doctor mentioned this would happen. He said that after losing some weight, your body would have to get used to your new weight, and kind of “catch up.”

I last weighed in on March 5th and was 324.9 pounds. I weighed again on March 10th and was 324.8 pounds. Since it was only a 0.1 pound difference, I decided to weight myself again the next morning. On the 11th, I still weighed 324.8 pounds. Determined to see some weight loss, I weighed again this morning. It was 325.9. I gained a pound!

I don’t normally weigh myself 3 days in a row, but since I wasn’t seeing any change, I felt compelled to weigh in every morning.

I can’t help but feel a little discouraged about this. In the beginning, my eating habits were boring and simple. I wasn’t using a lot of sauces or flavorings. I eventually started adding low calorie sauces or broths or spices to flavor the food I was eating because it had gotten extremely boring. (There’s only so much plain chicken you can eat before you get bored!)

I have also been putting everything I eat into a daily calorie tracker. I have stayed relatively consistent with my calorie intake being between 1800-1900 calories a day.

I’ve also been consistently working out twice a week. In the beginning, I wasn’t working out at all.

I feel a little lost right now. I’m wondering if I should go back to the boring, simple foods I was eating early on such as grilled chicken, brown rice, and steamed broccoli. I have been having a lot of fun making healthy foods and making them taste good by experimenting with different flavors, but is this why I’m not losing weight?

I’m also wondering if the answer to getting over this plateau is to workout more often. I work some long days during the week, and I’m usually tired and hungry after I get home, but maybe I should be getting in more exercise.

I know what the doctor said about there being a plateau, but I guess I never imagined it would affect me this way. I’m trying not to feel down, but I am. I just feel like I’ve worked so hard this past 3 months, and I don’t want to stop, because I have so much further to go in my journey.

Workout Wednesday

Wednesday is a good night for me and the BFF to get together for a workout since she comes to Tulsa (she lives 30 minutes or so from me). I hadn’t planned to workout tonight but when she texted me, I thought, “Well I’d love to see her so, yeah, let’s workout!”

We didn’t have a plan of what we wanted to do for our workout. So, since we’re both participating in The Color Run, we figured we should either walk on the treadmill or do the elliptical. She chose the elliptical so that’s what we decided to do. We ended up going for 30 minutes and I burned a little over 200 calories. I was pretty impressed with myself cause there have been times when I couldn’t last 5 minutes on the elliptical. The 30 minutes went by quickly since we had so much to catch up on and it was a great feeling to workout again. It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve exercised. We already have plans to go again Sunday.

Not only did I get a workout in tonight, but the BFF also brought me some treats! Healthy treats! Here’s a picture of the goods.

20130227-225119.jpg

The bottom two goodies are roasted chickpeas. The flavor on the right is a taco type flavor and the flavor on the left is agave and cinnamon. These were both delicious and a great snack! I think I’ll pack some in my lunch for tomorrow.

The top right little muffins are a healthy chocolate chip muffin made using mashed bananas and sweet potatoes and no flour. They tasted just like a chocolate chip muffin with a mild banana flavor. Soooooo good!

And last, but certainly not least, are raw brownie bites! They’re obviously the dark brown balls on the plate. 🙂 These were my favorite! I’m not 100% sure what all is in them. When the BFF was telling me about them, she said they were bad so I guess I stopped paying attention to what was in them, haha. I know she used dates, unsweetened cocoa powder, almond extract, vanilla extract, Splenda, and stevia. Either way, they were yummy! It was kinda crunchy inside and tasted like a brownie bite with nuts in it. I ate them both for dessert. 🙂

To complete this great day, my sister caught up on reading my blog and posted 8 great comments on all my previous posts. It was nice to log in and read her thoughts. I didn’t realize just how much I appreciate her encouragement and support until I didn’t have it for a week (she was on vacation). I’m glad she’s back!

Anyways, just a reminder, tomorrow is Foodie Pen-Pal reveal day! I’ll post about what I received in my box this month. You don’t want to miss it! 🙂

My 27 Goals

My BFF recently told me about this idea she read about where on your birthday every year, you make a list of goals you want to accomplish that year. The number of goals you make is based off of how old you are. Even though my birthday is in November, I still thought it was a cool idea and I wanted to participate. Better late than never!

The BFF posted her goals on her blog recently and it inspired me to make my own list (I had been procrastinating). Here’s a link to see her 26 goals.
Megan’s Blog

So here goes MY list of 27 goals.

1. Start a blog- Well that was easy. I can mark this off of my list.

2. Compete in the Color Run 5k- I participated in the Glow Run, which was fun, but the color run looks like even more of a good time. My mom and I are going to do it together in April!

3. Lose 60 Pounds- The last weigh in I did was on Sunday and I weighed in at 335 pounds. That’s a 37 pound weight loss! I’m already over halfway there. Of course I’m going to keep going after 60 pounds, but this is a nice small stepping stone to a larger goal.

4. Go to New York for a weekend with my mom- My mom travels a lot and goes to New Jersey often. She mentioned me possibly flying out to NYC and having a fun weekend together since she’ll be in that area already. I’m excited and hope we get to do this because I’ve always wanted to go to NYC!

5. Go to Church more often- I’ve already accomplished this one as well. I’ve been to a church function, a Sunday night church service, and I’m going to Sunday morning service this Sunday. And I have been doing Bible study every Tuesday for the past 3 Tuesday’s.

6. Try a new restaurant- I always say there are tons of restaurants I wanna try but I usually end up going to the same places. Since I’m not eating out hardly at all, this would be a nice treat to do once.

7. Make new friends- I’ve got some great friends, so I’m not trying to replace any of them. It can never hurt to meet new people though. Did you ever know someone who had too many friends?

8. Clean my apartment- Like a deep clean. If you know me, you know I’m messy. And I’d like to actually have people over, which leads me to my next goal…

9. Have people over to my apartment- I never have anyone over because my apartment is messy. I’m determined to get it clean and keep it that way so that I can have people over and feel comfortable with it.

10. Meet my nephew- My only sibling is having her first baby and I’m soooo excited! He’s due in May and I plan on going to Dallas after he’s born to meet him. He’s going to be the cutest thing ever and I plan to spoil him and be the best aunt I can be!

11. Make another super healthy dessert- I enjoyed the banana chocolate blueberry muffins so much that I’d like to make another healthy dessert. It was just so cool to me that they turned out like a cupcake even though there was no butter, oil, or sugar. Crazy!

12. Get my teeth whitened- Who doesn’t want whiter teeth? I feel like mine could use a little whitening so why not?

13. Make a killer playlist to workout to- Pretty self explanatory. Rhapsody is amazing and I’m sure I can create a great playlist from all their song selections.

14. Go to a meseum- I haven’t been to a museum in forever! I’ve been talking about wanting to go to one so I put it on my list. Now I’ll have to make time for it. 🙂

15. Take my grandma out for a day of fun- I don’t see my grandma often enough so I should make an effort to spend some quality time with her. You never know, it could be her time to go tomorrow, and I don’t want to regret not spending time with her.

16. Read 3 books- I need to start reading again. I just don’t make time for it and I should. Three books isn’t that many, I can do it!

17. Go to Trader Joes- When I go down to Dallas next time, I’m going to visit Trader Joes. I hear it’s pretty great and that they’ve got good prices. I wish they’d bring one to Tulsa.

18. Light my candles more often- I love candles and I buy them pretty often, but I don’t light them that often and I don’t know why. They smell so great.

19. Watch the sun set- This one is simple and it happens every single day but I never pay attention to it.

20. Exercise with my sister- I can already imagine what this will look like. I’ll be a biggest loser contestant and she’ll be Jillian. Haha. I remember back in the day my sister and I used to do Tae Bo together and then go eat spam sandwiches. It was a lot of fun! Except this time, no spam.

21. Change the lightbulbs in my apartment- Some of them have gone out and I still haven’t changed them out. It’s getting darker in my apartment…haha.

22. Buy a lunch box- I need something besides a Reasors sack to bring my lunch in. I also need a reusable ice pack so I can keep it cold.

23. Paint something at Pinot’s Palette- I’ve been dying to go and paint a picture there! I hope to do this one soon with my momma.

24. Go to the farmers market on Saturday morning- Now that I’m eating more vegetables, it’d be nice to get some local fresh veggies from the farmers market.

25. Give up diet pop for a week- This one might be hard. I’m hoping that if I can give it up for a week, then I can try to cut it out completely. We shall see!

26. Cook together with my dad- This one is easy because I do it often, but it’s something I enjoy and I’d love to keep it up. We make a lot of healthy stir-frys in the wok I got him for Christmas. It’s become part of our Sunday ritual and I cherish that father daughter time together.

27. Make homemade doggy treats for my dog- I don’t buy treats often for my dog. She’s getting older and I think her stomach doesn’t tolerate them as well as it used to. I’ve heard that pumpkin is good to soothe a dogs stomach so I’d love to make her a treat that’s good for her.

Well, that’s my list of 27 goals I’d like to accomplish before November 13th 2013. I’ll update you on my progress as I complete them. I really like this idea of making goals. It gives you something to look forward to doing and it gives you a sense of accomplishment after you complete a goal. You should try it too!

It’s My Time

~Go hard today.
Can’t worry bout the past cause that was yes-terday.
Ima put it on the line cause it’s my time.~

These are lyrics from a song they played in The Biggest Loser episode tonight. Although there was some good stuff in this episode, this song is really what stood out to me the most. I immediately logged into rhapsody and found the song to listen to.

20130204-231316.jpg

They played this song while the contestants were working out in the gym. Talk about motivational! It instantly made me wanna go get a workout in. You should pull up the song and listen to it too! 😉

I had planned to workout after I got home from work, just a simple 15 minutes or so. But once I got home I was hungry for dinner so I decided I wouldn’t workout. I ate while I watched TBL. When I heard the song on the show, I changed my mind about working out. I am still feeling a little guilty about my eating on Sunday so I told myself I can go for 15 minutes. And I did!

The last time I worked out (5 days ago) I walked/ran for 15 minutes and I went 0.75miles. This time I wanted to make a better time than that. So I started with a slow run while I was fresh and then slowed down to walk when I got tired. I kept alternating between running and walking. This time I ran/walked for 15 minutes and 30 seconds and I went 0.90miles. I’m really proud of that improvement.

Running when you’re overweight is hard, especially when you’re 341 pounds. I’m actually surprised I could run most of the 15 minutes. But I did it and I feel really good about it! My next goal is to go again on Thursday or Friday. And of course, I’ll definitely be working out to my new favorite workout song. 🙂
